I'm a partner at btov Partners, a European venture capital firm based in St.Gallen, Switzerland and Berlin, Germany. My investment focus is digital technology, particularly SaaS, AI, mobile, fintech and marketplaces.

CTO

From 2010-2018 I was the Chief Technology and Strategy Officer of Pixability, Inc., a video advertising and marketing software company that helps brands and agencies leverage the power of big video platforms (YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, OTT) with big data analytics and AI. I was responsible for product, technology strategy and data science.

I was also the Chief Technology Officer (and co-founder) of Buzzient, Inc., a software company based in Cambridge, MA. Buzzient provided enterprise-class social media analytics and CRM integration.

CEO/Co-Founder

I'm a co-founder of e-business consultancy Namics AG (formerly delta Consulting Group AG). Namics currently has 600+ employees and works for major customers such as Nestlé, Microsoft, European Central Bank, and Mercedes Benz. From 2002 to 2004 I was the CEO of Namics AG. Before that, I was Head of Consulting and Head of Technology. Between 2004 and 2008, I was a member of the board of directors. Namics was acquired by PubliGroupe in 2000, bought back by its management team in 2012 and acquired again by Merkle (part of Dentsu Aegis) in 2018.

Angel Investor

Some highlights:
I was the first angel investor and board member in speech technology company SVOX, which sold in 2011 to Nuance Communications for $125M. SVOX is the speech technology in Android and most luxury cars.
I was also an investor and board member of Blogwerk AG, a Web 2.0 startup focusing on blog content for the German-speaking region of Europe. It was acquired by WEKA Media in 2012.  

My most recent investment is WePlayed, a Boston-based startup in the sports video space.

Researcher

From 1993-1996 I was a research assistant at the Institute for Information Management at the University of St.Gallen, Switzerland (HSG). Research projects in the fields of electronic markets, e-banking, groupware, and e-learning.  
After my time at MIT I also co-wrote an article about Internet business models with MIT professor Michael Cusumano. It appeared in the Oxford Handbook of Internet Studies.

Corporate Innovator

From Fall 2004 to November 2005, I was the founding CEO for the creation of new business unit Publiconnect at Swiss media company PubliGroupe. Publiconnect provided a technology platform for cross-media classified advertising.

MIT Master's Thesis

My Master's Thesis, submitted in May 2007 to the MIT Sloan School of Management:

The Emerging Market for Web-based Enterprise Software (PDF, 3.4MB)

 

Web-based enterprise software – sometimes referred to as “Software as a Service” (SaaS) or “on demand software” – is a major wave of innovation that introduces a new technical and economic model to enterprise software. This study analyzes a sample of 108 companies currently offering SaaS-based products. In total, 35 different application types and 20 different combinations of revenue models were counted. Furthermore, the thesis presents frameworks for the analysis of web-based software products and for strategic decisions for vendors willing to enter this market.

Mocmoc

In 2004, I made a documentary film about the "Mocmoc" art project.

 

Mocmoc is a mythical creature, created by Swiss artist duo Com&Com. The Mocmoc statue stands on the center square of the city of Romanshorn in Switzerland and caused a major scandal there. The documentary shows the story behind this art scandal and the massive international media coverage that followed.

 

2004, 45 Min. Available on DVD and YouTube, Swiss-german with English and German subtitles.


I also wrote an article in the book about the Mocmoc project. 

Gugusdada

In 2006, I completed a DVD for the "Gugusdada" project by Swiss artist group Com&Com, containing interviews, documentary material and a music video. The project celebrates the re-opening of Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, the birthplace of the Dada art movement. 


Swiss TV broadcast a report about the project, featuring my video clip for the "Gugusdada" theme song.  

Namics Art Award

Namics ag, one of the companies that I co-founded, awarded a prize between 2000 and 2008 for contemporary media art, co-financed by my co-founder Philipp Lämmlin and myself. This award intended to support and promote young artists that use modern media in their work.
